Techno yes or
no ?
- Why
Techno music is so difficult to be accepted by so
many people even by so many musicians ?
Why does it seem to frighten so many people?
This is a question that i would like to discuss
to try to understand reasons of a fact which
seems to me very strange .

Why has the R'n'R frightened so many
people?
And jazz music too?
First of all 'cause it's new.
Second IOHO it has a "mystical" or
"spiritual" side that always frightens.
Where do the sounds come from? Strange blinking
boxes, the sound finds its magical origins..the
drum of the shaman...
How do I listen to techno? I cannot sing it
along, there's no refrain: I do have to listen to
it, sit down (or stand up & dance) and let
the sounds take me for a trip..
...rhytmical patterns that mesmerize (sufism?),
textures that blow my mind away (mystical
experience?)
So that I do _listen_ to music and let the music
communicate me emotions and so on..
And that's dangerous 'cause when I listen to it i
feel and think about ...
..u all know that thinking and feeling is hard
and dangerous, isn't it?

In italy the music trends arrives
with 5 or more years of delay, despite of the
rest of europe. So, it's the same story with
techno.
In the UK it has become popular music (EMF, ORB,
Orbital, Underworld has reached the no.1 in the
UK charts many times).
Italian music is frozen on the same genres:
italians seems to be afraid of the new musical
trends. But I think it's a problem of audience.
Medias (TV, Radio, Musical Press) put the same
records and talk about the same shit everyday (so
if you are a musician and you don't play the same
Sanremo stuff you have no chance to have an
audience. And no audience for new stuff means no
change of perspective in the musical tastes of
the audience itself).

Only two generations ago, we were a
relatively frugal people, living within our
means. Today we are the "North American
pig" -- bloated with excess, heavily in debt
and out-pigging everyone else in sight.
Overconsumption is just the most obvious symptom
of a larger sickness; our culture is so empty
that it needs to stuff itself to feel full.
But sneaking up behind it is the culture jammer,
and she's got a pin sharp enough to pop the whole
deal...

certa attitudine a girare e a toccare superfici
definita o infinita e che permettono all'energia
questione, "MA COSA VUOL DIRE TECHNO?"
DEPECHE MODE, POWER STATION, PANKOW, LED ZEPPELIN
e RENEGADE SOUNDWAVE.
ministry, nin, revolting cocks...

The last message was in Italian and
i think i must explain why we decided to publish
it exactly how we received.
The author is a musician ,founder of a very
important italian group called PANKOW.
In these days is making a Tour with the group in
Germany ,where they are well known .
The message he sent to Forum is a sort of
analysis of electronic music in these last ten
years ,but it seems to me that it is something
more .
He points out aspects of musical research that i
think are very important.
One over all :at a certain point of the letter he
says :
" these last ten years have given a big
contribution to the putrefaction of the
electronic music, but luckily they are ending .
The last stabs have been given by the Americans
,with their guitars and distortions: ministry
,nin, revolting cocks....
After all this slaughter ,the common sense seems
to prevail ,electricity is once more flowing from
brain through spine exploding in all organs
including heart !!! "
In these words i see a sort of
contraddiction.Guitars and other forms of
distortions aren't a form of expression who take
electronic music nearer...........to heart?
Or all this is a false problem ? ; when your
music comes from all your " organs " it
doesn't matter which way of expression or which
kind of instruments you use .

perche', secondo me, come "techno" si
forme.
Io, che (non so dire se in bene o in male) in
quel periodo dovevo essere ancora
"pensato", ho piacere che questo
movimento riaccada.

I don't think that
"experimentation" is a new trend of
those recent days.
Experimental music has always been existed
through those years.
What has changed are the instruments.
The digital samplers (but, before that, the Brian
Eno's tapeloops) started a musical revolution in
the way of making music.
Vintage analogue instruments has also made the
job.
An analogue instrument does not ever play the
same timbre.
I think that the future of techno is in
generative music (see Sseyo Koan Pro as an
example):
instead of a fixed score, where you have to play
certain notes at a certain time, you have a set
of rules.
Depending on how you fix those rules you will be
able to make music that never sound the same.
It's someway between a record, with its fixed
music, and a live gig. But it's portable (you can
play generative music in your home).
The big hole (especially in italy) to fill is the
existing gap between rock (with acoustic
instruments) and techno.
We could talk about it.
